When Rykodisc aquired the rights to David Bowie's record catalog, they preceded the release of his actual albums with this box set. It is not really a "best of" set, it is more of a sampler of songs from all of Bowie's albums from 1969 to 1980. Almost all the albums are represented by three songs, with some of the songs being rarities from the album sessions. I should point out that none of the rarities featured here were included on the Rykodisc reissues of Bowie's actual albums. Aside from the songs, there is a music video of "Ashes to Ashes" which was playable on a laserdisc player, if you rememember that obsolete technology. This is a pretty good box set, but it's not really a definitive collection, since many of Bowie's most popular songs were left off of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare and fabulous..., April 23, 2010

I would'nt normally use the word fabulous but its just so appropo here! Most of this box set is rare items that are mostly as good as the released material mixed in with album tracks. The Box itself won a grammy for best packaging. I think its much much better than the box set that replaced it. The sound here is excellent, as the Ryko remastering was very good....but....the Bowie remasters ARE better. So maybe the replacement box set is a better choice, but there are some items on the new box set I dont really agree with...I love this box set and its definately one of my favorite bowie items. Here you get the ultra rare version of rebel rebel (which I like better) and a recording of prettiest star Bowie did with Marc Bolan..and lots of other goodies!

This is the Canadian Box Set that is so rare and hard to find. Containing 49 songs from 1969 to 1980, there are great cuts, rare B-sides, live recordings, unreleased singles and previously unreleased material. The box itself is a 12" X 12" standard with a 3-D see-through cover and also contains a lengthy booklet with history, notes, and rare photographs.

Disc 1 contains unreleased versions of, "Space Oddity (Demo)", "London Bye Ta-Ta", rare B-sides, "Wild Eye Boy From Freecloud", "Round & Round" and cuts from "The Man Who Sold The World", "Hunky Dory", "Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust", "Aladdin Sane" and "Ziggy Stardust: The Movie".

Disc 2 contains unreleased versions of, "1984/Dodo", "After Today", "It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City", cuts from "Pin-Ups", "Diamond Dogs", "David Live", "Young Americans" and "Station To Station".

Disc 3 contains the German version of "Heroes" ("Helden"-worth the set alone) and cuts from "Low", "Heroes", "Live From Stage", "Lodger" and "Scary... Read more
