    5.0 out of 5 stars A full two-hour show, April 17, 2004

This review is from: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore - Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
An unusually small but powerful group--FZ, Napoleon Murphy Brock, George Duke, Tom Fowler, Ruth Underwood, and Chester Thompson--performed in Helsinki September 22nd 1974. The whole concert was captured on tape, and is presented on these two discs without ANY over-dubs, and with clear audio. Since this is the only volume from the YCDTOSA series that features the same group, and performances from only one concert throughout, these two discs naturally have a comforting main thread. This talented group had been playing together for a whole year prior to this performance, and in the liner notes Zappa has pointed out that the band therefore is so comfortable with the material that they could probably have performed it blindfolded, which I do not doubt. The only unrehearsed number here is the Finnish tango "Satumaa", which is a special request for only this particular concert. The band sight-reads the number on stage (very well), and Brock makes an attempt to sing the lyrics to the song... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest live BANDS ever assembled!, January 4, 1999
This review is from: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore - Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
While many Zappaphiles will forever debate about Zappa's live bands, there is no question to this musichead that not only were the '74-era Mothers Of Invention the most accomplished of them all, they were also one of the finest pure BANDS ever!

All the elements of Zappa & The Mothers are here. Frank's unnerving wit ("Stinkfoot"), blistering instrumental passages ("Inca Roads"), complicated & challenging changes performed at effortless clips ("Inca Roads", "RDNZL") and daring humor ("Room Service"). While a good chunk of this material is found on The Roxy & Elsewhere, every version here is easily tighter and superior, especially "Village Of The Sun".

If there is a flaw anywhere in this set -- and this is arguable -- it's the overlong drum/percussion solo, but the Mothers clearly give new meaning to the term "ensemble". It is clear every musician listens to each other in the strictest... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The Incredible Helsinki Concert, December 21, 2003

From its opening Tush Tush Tush (usually don't want the kids to listen too closely) to the Montana/Whipping Post double speed jam this hilarious concert is incredible.

There are alot of great Zappa recordings... it is hard to choose a favorite. But my preference is for the early 70's sound. (My favorite studio work is HOT RATS.) What makes this double CD so good is that it covers the whole concert and with one of the best bands Frank put and kept together. Also there is the contrast with how the band sounded at the beginning of the tour (as recorded on the excellent ROXY AND ELSEWHERE), and here something like 6 months later. The band knows the tunes inside out, and you get the treat of hearing the uptempo changes they can make, such as the double time version of Village Of the Sun.

Zappa is not always an easy listen (thank God!), he is though one of the best American composers of the 20th century, and his torturous sounds and songs are worth getting through to get the pearls... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Zappa Album (or two), September 26, 2000
This review is from: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore - Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
This set works perfectly on a couple of different levels. As an introduction to the "non-serious" part of Frank's World, it's great. While it doesn't have most of the "signature" tracks (Peaches, Montana, Dancin' Fool, Valley Girl, etc.), it gives the needed depth and breadth (Sorry Gail). The Zappa catalog is both vast and varied. So how do you get the guitar playing, arranging, twisted humor, and maybe even a hint of the monstrous line-ups that Frank put together (again and again and again)? There isn't a studio record that can do it, largely because so much of Frank's reputation was built on his live shows.

We get a 15 year overview (1969-1984) on two discs, ranging from on-the-road-between-show-conversation about vomiting on stage (The Florida Airport Tape) and on-stage rap about various health problems in the band (Diseases Of The Band), to sharing life on the road with groupies (The Groupie Routine, on a far better night than the Fillmore record).

      And then... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars a great start to a great series, February 24, 2001
This review is from: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore - Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
The ycdtosa series is essential listening for any zappa fans. this is the first installment. it starts off with some dialogue from 1970, then the sofa lecture-straight into conceptual continuity! The flo and eddie version of sofa is beautiful. you can't go wrong with sofa (it also appears in the 2nd disc as the closing song). Then we go forward in time , to 1982 one of frankie's most technically proficient bands. The mammy nuns theme from thing fish, a staggering solo from frank, which is one of the highlights of this album. After a splendid 1980 u didn't try to call me, the 1979 band is introduced to us. They are a sick bunch, with stomach flu, malnutrition and mental health problems but whip up a terrific tryin' to grow a chin anyway. sung by denny walley who fluffs a line at the end! Then we go back to the 60s mothers with a nice medley. they broke up (or frank disbanded them morelike) a few months after this. After some more flo and eddie with the groupie routine, we get a tasty... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars My wife hated Zappa., March 22, 2009

      J. Galt (El Paso, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore - Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
I found it slighty disconcerting to see FZ's music pigeon-holed as "Progressive" on the Amazon website. Zappa has a vast and varied body of work ranging from fusion to 4/4 rock. If you listen closely to the things he did onstage in this compilation you will find this to be true. "The Evil Prince" is a scathing indictment against Android Lloyd Webber and his almost single-handed destruction of the Broadway musical. How can you not laugh when you hear George Duke intone about his "Great plan". When my then wife first heard Volume 1 she said; "How can you listen to that"? I replied how can you not? That was 12 years ago. J.... is long gone. Frank is still here.

Guitar solos and nothing but. Meticulously culled and assembled by Zappa from live recordings made between 1979 and 1980, this three part set features some of the most dynamic and musical guitar work recorded anywhere by anyone. From the rhythmically dazzling "five-five-FIVE" to the unique lyricism of the three title tracks, Zappa proves beyond doubt that he belongs among the most elite of rock's guitar virtuosos. The remarkable interplay between Zappa and Vinnie Colaiuta--some consider this to be the drummer's best work--provides this album with some of its most memorable moments. --Andrew Boscardin

        5.0 out of 5 stars Frank's mind shines through, January 12, 2000

This review is from: Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar (Audio CD)
I had to write this review because I found it alarming that the average was only 4 out of 5 stars. There's no need to be a guitar player to appreciate this album, although it certainly doesn't hurt in one's appreciation of just how unorthodox FZ's style was. But the whole point of this set is NOT to showcase how good a guitar player Zappa was, but of how good a musical mind he had. One of Frank's favorite things to do was improvising solos; it was an interesting challenge to him, to spontaneously come up with musical events worth listening to. Lest you think this set is self-indulgent, be aware that Zappa was very critical of his abilities. He considered most of the solos he played to be failures; what you hear on these discs is a collection of the ones which he thought were worth sharing with the world. In fact this was originally a mail-order release and was eventually licensed to CBS for sale in stores due to overwhelming demand. It seems even Frank didn't know how... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars No Lyrics Whatsoever, But Frank's In Fine Voice Regardless, August 27, 2001
This review is from: Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar (Audio CD)
Little-heralded progressive masterwork from a visionary who straddled many genres and transcended them all. Even if you were one of those folks who didn't care for Zappa's smirking cynicism and unorthodox (to say the least) arrangements - he didn't go out of his way to be popular - nobody questioned the man's god-like chops. This 3 CD set of absolutely flabbergasting guitar solos is one of Zappa's amazing 'xenocrony' productions (the liner notes describe this process in detail; typically for Zappa, it's backbreakingly painstaking and requires innate musical ingenuity). All 20 selections collected flow more or less continuously, generally seperated by spoken-word snippets or a short burst of static. To the non-initiated who are dipping a toe into the water and ripe to dive in, let me assure you this blows the doors off every Satriani/Malmsteen-type shredfest combined, and will stun, delight and enthrall ANYBODY with a CD player and a brain, both in working order. Essential as oxygen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shut Up & Buy Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar, April 2, 2003
This review is from: Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar (Audio CD)
For our anniversary, my beloved girlfriend bought this set for me. I've never received a better gift. Zappa released too many masterpieces to have a single one consigned as "his best work". But, for the bean-counters, Shut Up is among his top 5. Most rock guitarists spend their careers (if they're lucky enough to have one) recycling Stones & Zeppelin riffs (my god, why?) and running up & down pentatonic scales & tremelo picking three notes furiously for guitar solos. Why settle for that boring excrement? Frank Zappa had more nuance & versatility in his playing than all of those classic-rock radio cretins combined.

Nearly all of these solos are electric, but there is a bouzouki duet with Jean-Luc Ponty (Canard du Jour) that may be the best performance on the set. Zappa's ultra-eclectic technique veers from fusion to metal to eccentic blues so deftly that I, as a semi-guitarist, am filled with self-loathing. Although they are worlds apart in technique and...
