Nastos "The Concord label issued several volumes of immaculate solo piano recordings from the Maybeck Recital Hall, and this four-CD set devotes a disk apiece to pianists of different jazz stripes and styles from that series. The more modal and progressive Joanne Brackeen kicks things off with eight standards done in her own inimitable fashion, as well as witty modern originals "Dr. Chu Chow," "Curved Space," and "African Aztec." Next up is the stride master Dave McKenna, never a songwriter but great interpreter of standards and an expert playing solo, as demonstrated by two "Knowledge" medleys and spirited versions of "C Jam Blues" and "Lighthouse Blues." The staunch traditionalist Dick Hyman is immensely talented and at times animated playing standards with jaunty refrains, but also offers two originals among his 11 total cuts -- "Bob White" and "Loch Lomond."
